More Frightening Statistics

- In the USA, 5% of the world population consumes one fifth of the world's energy.
- The USA consumes approximately 100 million terajoules of energy in a year. Of that total, approximately 15% is used in food production and distribution.
- Each item of food on a plate in the USA has made an average trip of over 2400 kilometres by boat, plane, train or automobile.
- Between one quarter and one fifth of the food produced in the USA gets wasted.
- In a year, the average American family of four spends almost $600 on food that they do not eat.
- Almost 2.2 million terajoules embedded in food waste was discarded in the USA in 2007 - the energy equivalent of about 350 million barrels of oil.
- 350 million barrels of oil is almost double Switzerland's total annual energy consumption.
- Global energy consumption is projected to increase by nearly 50% between 2006 and 2030.
